Movie Day #2

Today during class, we watch Slumdog again. We didn't get to finish today. How our community and the community in the movie is different is they way of living. Most of the people in the movie don't have enough money in order to have the basics. For example, the mothers are washing their clothes in toxic water. We wash our clothes with washing machines. Their houses are right next to each other and very compacted. We have lawns that separate our homes, except for apartments. Their police officers can punish or threaten criminals or anyone in order to get the information the would need. They don't have proper toilets. They have outhouses. Their teachers can physically hit the children if they don't pay attention or anything. Teachers here cannot do that. The main characters look 5 or 6 years old, and they are already working. They work at a outdoor bathroom to make money. Children here are not allowed to work.

Movie Day

Today during class, we watch a movie called Slumdog. The movie was talking about a boy that lived in a very poorly area and has been accepted to go into a tv show called Want to be a Million Air. The boy got into the tv show and answered the questions that he was asked to answer correctly. The odd part about all this was that he lives in a place that is poor and the education isn't very great. The police are suspicious and don't believe that he got all the questions correct. The police thought he was cheating. The police tortured him so that he would tell them how he answered the questions correctly.  Throughout the movie, there are flashbacks on how he answered the questions correctly. It was flashbacks back then when he was going through a hard time in his child hood and he passed by some of the answers to the questions he was asked. It was flashbacks of him being in school and learning about the questions. It was flashbacks of random things like for example, one question was about what was God holding his right hand. In his flashback, when these people were coming into his hometown and destroying it, he passed by this boy that was dressed up and covered in blue paint with a wig on. The boy was holding a bow and arrow in his right hand. And that was the answer to the question. It was a bow and an arrow.

Soda? Coke? Pop?

Today during class, we talked about cultural characteristics. Cultural characteristics are parts of a groups everyday life. They are the ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members. These same characteristics can also link or divide a region. Examples are language, religion, and ethnic heritage. We looked at a map that showed what counties in the United States call soda. Each county is color coded indicating what each county called soda. For example, counties colored yellow called soda soda. Counties colored blue called it pop. Counties colored red called soda coke. We learned why in the southeast of the United States there are mostly red but only the bottom of Florida had yellow. That was because people form the northeast had moved down to florida because of the cold weather. They brought along with them soda. That is why they call soda soda instead of coke. We also talked about the kids who could speak different languages. Students who could speak  many languages are rare in the United States. As the generation goes on, the parents wont teach the language to the child.

Israel National Anthem

English translation: As long as the Jewish spirit is yearning deep in the heart, With eyes turned toward the East, looking toward Zion, Then our hope - the two-thousand-year-old hop - will not be lost: To be free people in our land, The land of Zion and Jerusalem. The national anthem sounds sad. It sounds like a war was over and this song was sang. This national anthem compared to our national anthem, the Israel's national anthem sounds weaker than ours. Ours sounds like it has more energy is our voices. Israel's national anthem sounds calmer and more sad.

Presidents Test

Today during class, we took the test on the presents. I was expecting something about the presidencies terms, how they can be impeached or taken down, and the type of government each state has. I thought the test would be more focused around these questions but it was not. Before the test, we had to do a power point on a state. The questions we had to answer for the power point was the presidencies terms, how they can be impeached or taken down, and the type of government each state has. But when I got the test, I saw that the questions were mostly about the presidents themselves. Some of the questions were based on the power points but most of them were mostly talked about in class and facts about the presidents. The test was ok for me. It was kind of hard. The very last question was a essay. I thought the essay was ok because it was something that we talked about in class yesterday. We talked about how un-American it would be for an American to kill the president. We also talked about why it was wrong to kill the president. And on the test, the last question was about that. I couldn't write down a lot because I didn't remember everything. I only remember that it would not be fair for the people that voted for the president and the president be killed by someone that doesn't like the president. Its one person that hates him vs thousands of people that voted for him for a cause.

Israel Project

Today during class, we got to work on our project in class. We got to use all the time in class to work. Steven and I worked on our power point. I was working on finding the government and presidents. Steven was working on the other slides. I had a hard time trying to find on how to change the leadership of Israel. I spent a good 30 mins trying to find it. By the end of class I couldn't find it so that was my job for homework. The background I used was the Israel flag. I used that background for all of the slides since I didn't know what to put as a background. Steven found pictures of the president and the prime minister.
